The term “Iyengar Yoga” is shorthand for classical yoga taught

by the methods developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar of Pune, India (pictured right).

Iyengar Yoga was founded in 1936 by Yogacharya Sri Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (B.K.S.) Iyengar. Iyengar believed that it is incorrect to differentiate between specific methods of yoga as they all share the same root and purpose. However, his name started to be associated with the methodology of his teachings and as such Iyengar Yoga came to be recognised as a discrete branch of Yoga.

BKS Iyengar was arguably the most influential yoga teacher in the world - having taught for nearly eighty years and with more students following his method than any other branch of yoga. In 2004, Time magazine cited him as one of the 100 most influential people of the twentieth century.

Over the years, his teachings have been published in numerous books. His classic book, Light on Yoga, first published in 1966, opened up the practice of Astanga Yoga to millions of practitioners worldwide. Iyengar also pioneered the modern use of yoga for therapeutic purposes as well as the use of props to facilitate the understanding of correct actions in postures.  The Iyengar legacy is being continued by his daughter Geeta, his son Prashant and his grand-daughter Abijata.

The Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark is an international symbol, which certifies the high level of training and continuing education in the Iyengar Yoga methodology and community.

The Iyengar methodology is renowned for its safe, orderly and progressive approach to teaching the sophisticated subtleties of Yoga.  The method is very precise with great attention given to correct practice. You start with asanas (postures), including savasana (relaxation) and gradually more difficult asanas are introduced as your depth of understanding increases.
